A feminist exploration: Intersectionality
Join us for the fourth edition of “A feminist exploration” – this time, we will focus on intersectionality. Intersectionality is a term coined by Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989 describing how systems of oppression based on e.g. race, class, and gender are connected and work together. In order to accurately encounter these multifaceted experiences, it is not enough to address one or the other – e.g. racism or sexism – but one must understand the combination of these intersecting systems.
In this mini lecture, we will acquire an insight into how intersectionality has become an increasingly commonly used concept in EU and national policy debates. However, there is still a gap between discourse and concrete application in policies, practice and legislation. Together with Peggy Piesche, Consultant and Activist for Intersectionality and Decolonialisation, we will dive into how intersectionality operates as both the observance and analysis of power imbalances. An intersectional approach can be the tool for an equal justice infrastructure by which power imbalances could be eliminated altogether.
Why do we need intersectional feminism?How can intersectionality be put into practice and used by activists and policy makers as a tool for equality and solidarity? How can it be used to achieve more equality and justice for the most structurally disadvantaged, at the intersections between different grounds of discrimination? How can we ensure that equality laws and policies affect all groups of people equally? These are the questions we will touch upon in this fourth edition of the series.
