Set in Ethiopia at the beginning of WWII, Maaza Mengiste\u2019s critically acclaimed novel The Shadow King<\/a> <\/em>tells a story of women in war, in the context of fascist Italy\u2019s comparatively underrepresented colonial ambitions. It is a tale of visceral violence and multifarious resistance. Mengiste is joined in this discussion by Patricia Klobusiczky, one of the translators of the novel into German and head of the Verband deutschsprachiger \u00dcbersetzer\/innen from 2017 to 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event is part of the minor cosmopolitan assembly<\/a>, organised by the Research Training Group minor cosmopolitanisms of the University of Potsdam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaker Bios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maaza Mengiste is the author of The Shadow King<\/a><\/em>, shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize, and a recipient of the American Academy of Arts & Letters Award in Literature. It was named a Best Book of 2019 by New York Times<\/em>, NPR, Time<\/em>, Elle<\/em>, and other publications. Beneath the Lion’s Gaze<\/em>, her debut, was selected by the Guardian<\/em> as one of the 10 best contemporary African books. Maaza has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, DAAD, the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers, and the Fulbright Scholar Program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patricia Klobusiczky, born in 1968, translates literature written in French and English, from modern classics to contemporary voices from a wide array of cultural areas, from northern America to southern Africa, including works by Marie Darrieussecq, Petina Gappah, Catherine Mavrikakis and Maaza Mengiste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
